The misalignment between the expansive goal of health” and a cramped definition of care” has cost the United States untold lives and treasure. At the same time, thanks to grassroots innovation—and, in some cases, US-based funding—a growing number of health providers around the globe have learned to deliver high quality health care at low cost. The practices of countries that have improved health despite scarce resources are ready for adoption and adaptation.

As a college health doctor, I have been able to watch the rollout of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) among this population. And the US health care ecosystem, including public, private, and philanthropic resources, is ripe to leverage this crisis to implement solutions that will improve it. Acknowledging that licensed clinicians are not the only health care providers can help health systems become more efficient, effective, and equitable.
